Don Cherry made some comments about me last night whereas he went so far as to call me a “puke”, a “hypocrite”, and a “turncoat.” He contends that I said that I believe that guys who fought are prone to becoming drug addicts and alcoholics. He also implies that I believe fighting should be taken out of the game. All I can say is that could not be further from the truth. This is coming from a guy who I thought was a friend, a guy who kissed me and told me he loved me on a telecast during the Stanley Cup finals in 1986. What is the famous quote? “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” It was sad to watch and hear that from him. I believe he owes me an apology on air next Saturday night. That would be enough for me. My question being, is he man enough to admit he was wrong? I am not sure. I can’t answer my own question. What do you think?

MY REPLY TO COMMENTS MADE BY MR. CHERRY LAST NIGHT
Knuckles,
You’re the bigger man here, Cherry is a puke, coward and hypocrite himself. The chances of him apologising are about as great as those of the Leafs to win the Cup: less than zero. I’m sorry he insulted you, Grimson, and Thompson like this. It was uncalled for, classless, and pathetic.
I was outraged at his comments last night. You certainly deserve an apology for that rambling, angry, ridiculous and most of all, INCORRECT and MISINFORMED diatribe. Just as a fan wrote on another blog this morning, you gave everything you had as a hockey player and have earned the right to state your opinion whatever the forum or topic. Keep up the good fight, Knuckles. We love you.
Hi Chris,
I want to thank you for standing up and setting the record straight.
For years, my tolerance for Cherry and the CBC had waned. Last year was the straw that broke the camels back. Cherry’s openly blatant bigotry toward Subban (where were his scathing remarks about the likes of Lucic and Marchand?), and Milbury’s comments during a Superbowl weekend broadcast of the Habs vs the Rangers – where a fan tuning in would expect the broadcast to lean towards the Habs – did them in for me. I simply can’t watch. I’ll watch in french, on rds, not understanding all of the broadcast instead.
For the record, I can’t decide whether what we see is Cherry being himself, or schtick. All I do know is that his late wife kept him in check. Since her passing, he’s pushed the envelope further and further each year and done things he’d never have done were she alive.
I also hope he’s man enough to apologize, but I’m afraid I won’t be watching to find out.
Sincerely,
Ryan Coveyduc
Grapes needs to man up here…he got carried away by the hype.
you know I didnt get a chance to watch Coaches corner live lastnight but i watched it this morning on youtube and I gotta say I think Mr Cherry has gone to far with the accusation of calling you,and even Grimson and Johnson a hypocrite and whatnot.Myself personally yes i agree with you Knucks you deserve a apology as do the other two mentioned i dont think it was right what Don said.Do I think Mr Cherry can admit that he’s wrong I doubt it because with such a big ego like his its gonna be next to impossible for him to admit he was at least thats what I think I may be wrong.
Frank
How tasteless…Don should know better but then he’s Don!
Sadly, I don’t believe that you’ll get that apology, though you and the others certainly deserve one. Unless of course it becomes part of a CBC ratings grab. Try to keep in mind that almost everything that comes out of his mouth on that show is designed to cause chatter. Nothing he says has to be true, so long as people talk about him & watch the show. HNIC execs are probably dancing with glee right now thinking of the ratings boost. You are the better man, and your true fans will know it so long as you keep yourself above it. Meanwhile, I will enjoy the fantasy of you and all the guys that the Gutless Grapes called “pukes” meeting up with him in a dark alley somewhere.
The comments by Don Cherry were completely uncalled for, Knuckles, Stu and Jim are great people for brining awareness about this issue. But to call them out on national TV and fabricate information was a complete disrespect to them and the great game. Will he apologize? I doubt it because his ego is bigger than him but if he has any chance to redeem himself in the least bit and save a friendship with great legends, then he will have to face the music and own up to his comments.
New low for an already beaten man. Even more ignorant was his ststement regarding Max and Chara. Probably the smartest move on the part of CBC would be to replace MacLean with two guys named Larry and Moe to work with Cherry. For years now I flip to other channels during intermission. I wonder how many other viewers would admit to that.
I wouldnt be too concered with what Don Cherry has to say, like really.. I think he has lost touch with reality (if he ever had it in the first place) the guy is old news, boring and irritating. Thats why no one watchs CBC hockey anymore.
Mr. Nilan has class, Something Cherry has always lacked.
Chris,
Don Cherry has been a farce and a goof and a shame to our national game for WAY too long.
Not only do you deserve an apology, but as canadian hockey fans, CBC owes us an apology for having to watch such a clown…
To think that some people actually respect what he says…
Last night was the absolute last time I ever watch hockey on the CBC.
I hope you get your apology. But I won’t be watching to find out, so let us non-CBC watchers know how it turned out.
Keep up the good fight Knuckles.
Eric
Hi Chris,
First time I take the time to write in to a “sports celebrity“.
I was a Cherry fan but I think grapes is becoming more scenile in his old age. He actually said that u r a “hypocrite“ and said “who are you to talk against fighting“.
I would say that BECAUSE U WERE A FIGHTER gives u to talk about it in any way u want!
Bruno
Don’t wait on that apology. I was just as surprised to see Cherry complaining about the lack of hitting because guys are pulling up as a result of the new headshot rules. This was from the same guy who acted like Matt Cooke should be permanently banned for hitting Savard in a way that wasn’t even a penalty under the rules at the time. Now he’s upset that Scott Stevens couldn’t run Lindros and Kariya’s heads in today’s game?
The irony was when he said “It’s one thing I’m not, it’s a hypocrite.” Coach’s Corner should be re-named “Comedy Corner” at this point.
i had to take drugs after listening to cherry’s comments
now that he cant talk S*** about european players or russians due to society looking down on him,he has now hit a new low going after knuckles Nilan…Nilan is a pillar in society…speaks the truth and not afraid to speak what he thinks….IM BOYCOTTING CBC TILL HE APPOLOGIZES ON AIR TO CHRIS THE PILLAR OF SOCIETY NILAN
Hey Chris,
Don’t worry about Cherry. In the last few years , he has lost my respect and i bet alot of other Canadians that used to listen to him. We tolerated him because of his suits and the way he spoke his mind. Lately he has been stepping on many toes,he’s been very negative on almost everyone and everything. I think its due to age and insecurities about himself as being a top analyst. Well in my opinion he should of gained maturity instead of thrashing others for a short period in the limelight. He’s selling out and has lost my respect in many ways.
A fan of yours forever,
paul
I agree with you 100% Chris and he should apologize. Don has become a jealous ol’ bitter Leaf fan that can’t see things objectively. Why this guy is being paid with hard earned Candian tax dollars is the question of the decade isn’t it. You are right, the CBC is desperate for ratings and have sunk so low as to have this bigotted senile moron spew his hatred once a week. To be honest, the entire CBC network shouldn’t exist, I thought Harper would take care of that, hopefully he still will.
Good luck Chris and welcome home. You were a favorite of mine and always enjoyed instigating the “Nilan Nilan” chants back at the old forum. Personally I felt you should be doing color on the Habs radio casts, and I do enjoy listening when your on Melnick. Keep up the good work!
Cheers
Mark
Great reply!
As a fan of the Montreal Canadians few players have been more stand up on the ice and off as Chris Nilan has. While he might not have been blessed with the talent of Guy Lafleur (not many have been) Knuckles was just as valuable to his team as a leader and when times got tough…who you gonna call? That’s right Knuckles Nilan. Chris would then do what had to be done to help his team. Recently Montreal radio fans have had a chance to listen to Nilan tell it like it is. His views are straight to the point and honest. I didn’t hear what Cherry said but have read all about it and can’t imagine how he came to that conclusion. Maybe it was 1 of Don Cherry’s writers, Jack Daniels, Remy Martin or the Johnny Walker brothers, Black and Red
I have stopped listening to Don Cherry years ago. He has become an embarrassment to hockey in Canada and the CBC. He needs to retire and leave guys like Chris Nilan alone!
Dear Chris,
I have been listening to your media career grow since you first started becoming a regular on the Mitch Melnick show last May. What were at first funny idiosms in your delivery, have now becoma a stamp on who you are, and how you express your opinions. All of which are entertaining.
I grew up watching you wearing that cherished Number 30 for the Habs. You were, and will always remain one of my most favorite Habs to ever grace the ice in Montreal.
You are…..as I have gotten older and experienced more of life, a hero to me. Not because of what you did on the ice, but because my departed brother was not able to do what you did off the ice. THAT is life…..you stand by what you say, and, I do believe that you should be aggressive in making sure that other people in the media NEVER TWIST YOUR WORDS.
Always listening man….take care
Daniel Morris
That old blowhard habs hater is the major reason I will never watch habs games, or any games if I can avoid it, on CBC. Not only is pretty much the entire “team” there very much pro-leafs but they are also anti-habs, sometimes so much that it turns my stomach.
What can you do, haters gonna hate. They’re just jealous that the habs have 24 cups, and Cherry in particular hates them because they beat his bruins in the playoffs, he’s still butthurt from that.
Knuckles,
I rarely agree with Don Cherry but at end of the day, I believe he has the right to his opinion. He does NOT have the right to accuse somebody of saying something they obviously did not say. The old fart, had the chance on Fan 590 Toronto today, to say he was wrong about you but he chose to dig his heels in -DEEPER! WOW! what a tough guy. Got ABSOLUTELY no respect for this loser. I honestly, think his time is coming to an end. Quite honestly, Chris I’d loved to see you replace Cherry on HNIC. For that matter, they should replace that goof Ron Maclean with Mitch Melnick.
Cherry should have been gone along time ago.Last night was just horrible. You have so much more class and know what you are talking about. You would be the perfect replacement. Even though I don’t speak French I am switching to RDS. At least there I may learn some French and they have real NHL players not “the minor league butcher.”
the best

He was out of line ….. An apology is in order
I feel terrible that you get attacked by that right wing fascist. You’re 10 times the man he’ll ever be. It takes no guts at all to sling arrows in front of a camera. He should say it to your face.
It is a terrible shame that Don Cherry is given the forum to share his stupid rants. He is an embarrassment to Canadians, with his ridiculous attire, his bigotry, and his absurd views. He has no place on television, no place sharing his insights, no place disrespecting people like yourself. To answer your question, as much as I hope he is man enough to do so, I do not believe Don Cherry can or will apologize.
Chris, you are a class act and deserve respect. Best wishes, good luck and see you soon!
Stuart
My question is…doesn’t Don Cherry do this sort of thing at least once during hockey season ? He says something outrageous and everyone is talking about it. People tune in every Saturday to see what he will say next. I’m curious to watch what he has to say tomorrow night. He doesn’t know it all. He thinks he does. He’s just angry because his playing and coaching careers were nothing great.
He loves that limelight.
